The Mass. Ave. Project, August - November 2011. Mixed media.
Massachusetts Avenue (Mass. Ave.) is a street of just over 15 miles, running from the Dorchester neighborhood of Boston northwest all the way to the western edge of Lexington. Along its route, it is home to the Christian Science Monitor, MIT, Harvard, most of the Squares of Cambridge, and the town centers of Arlington and Lexington. It’s also the street I grew up on. On August 26, 2011, I walked all 15.1 miles of it, starting from the endpoint in Lexington and ending at the startpoint in Dorchester. Along the way, I took photos every mile on the mile, regardless of what was there and missing many of the more glamorous segments of the street. I then assembled these photographs into a map of the street, where the red line shows the course of the avenue and each photo is equal to approximately one mile. White lettering along the map shows the times when I started and finished the walk, and where the boundaries between towns occur along the street.
